TASAI Côte d’Ivoire country study on-going

TASAI has commenced fieldwork for the Côte d’Ivoire country study. This is the first TASAI study for the country and is supported by the African Development Bank (AfDB) -funded Technologies for Africa’s Agricultural Transformation (TAAT) II program. Under TAAT II, TASAI is part of the Policy Compact, which is led by the Africa Agricultural Technology Foundation (AATF).

The study will focus on the five components of the seed sector: Research and Development, Industry Competitiveness, Seed Policy and Regulations, Industry Competitiveness, and Support to Smallholder Farmers. In addition, the study will cover four priority cereal and legume crops in rice, maize, sorghum, and soya bean. The target for the fieldwork is to cover up to 61 active seed producers and importers, composed of 16 seed companies, 14 seed cooperatives, 3 individual seed producers, and 28 seed importers. The fieldwork will also cover the other key players in the seed sector including the Centre National de Recherche Agronomique (CNRA), which is the national agricultural research institute, Laboratoire National d’Analyse des Semences (LANASEM), ADERIZ, the government agency in charge of the rice sector, and the two national seed trade associations, Association Nationale des Semenciers de Côte d’Ivoire (ANASEM-CI) and the Union of Seed Companies in Côte d’Ivoire (USSEM-CI).

The study is being conducted in close collaboration with the Directorate of Seeds, Fertilizers and Related Products in the Ministry of State, Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Food Production (MEMINADERPV). The study will be officially launched during the forthcoming Côte d’Ivoire Seed Roadmap workshop that is being convened by the TAAT II program. The Côte d’Ivoire country research team consists of two seasoned seed experts: Dr. Sifolo Coulibaly, an Associate Professor at Peleforo Gon Coulibaly University, and Mr. Angelo Adou Kramogo, from the MEMINADERPV.

The Côte d’Ivoire country study will increase the scope of countries where TASAI studies have been conducted in the ECOWAS region, to nine.
